What You Might Not Know About Probiotics (And REAL Gut Healing)
If you’re a health-conscious person, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the advice “Take a probiotic!” about a million times on the internet. You’ll hear claims that probiotics can promise a healthy mood, weight loss, better digestion, and even lessen anxiety.
by Vincent Pedre, M.D., ‘America’s Gut Doctor’ and Bestselling Author of Happy Gut
As a gut health doctor, I’m the first to admit that probiotics are powerful natural medicine. But I worry that many people are missing out on the true benefits of probiotics. Why? Because they’re taking the wrong kind of bacteria, the wrong dose, or the wrong products — a product that isn’t REALLY designed for true gut healing.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that not all probiotics are created equally. So let’s dive into the science of these “little helpers” and how to make sure your probiotic supplement is actually doing its job.
Decoding Probiotic Supplements
Thanks to antibiotic therapy, illness, poor diet, stress, and environmental toxins, our gut flora can take a daily beating. And since we don’t consume fermented and fiber-rich foods regularly and in the quantity we did in the past (like the hunter-gatherer Hadza people of Tanzania, who I had the privilege to visit in February 2020) — which help to maintain healthy gut flora — probiotic supplements are not just an option, but a necessity, in order to expose our guts to a daily dose of good bacteria.
Probiotics can can serve to enhance our health in several key ways, including:
- Assisting with the digestion and assimilation of nutrients
- Helping inhibit the overgrowth of harmful bacteria
- Supporting the immune system
- Maintaining bowel health and promoting bowel regularity
- Helping restore and maintain balanced flora after antibiotics, which can also kill the beneficial gut flora
How Do You Pick?!
Walk down the supplement aisle in your local health food store or Whole Foods and you’ll see dozens of different probiotic supplements and get bombarded by all of their benefits. Each one advertises something different: “Women over 50” “Mood-Boosting” or “De-Bloating” are just some of the claims you might see.
When looking closely at a probiotic, there are a few things to take note of…
This is typically measured in colony-forming units (CFUs), which refers to the number of live and active microorganisms that can be found in each serving.
The dosage of probiotic supplements ranges widely; you’ll see probiotic supplements with CFUs that range from 10 billion all the way to 450 billion. But here’s the tricky thing about dosage: You want to make sure that the CFU count of your probiotic holds true for the entire shelf life of the supplement, which often isn’t’ the case because not every single one of the bacteria in your supplement will be alive during the entire shelf life of the probiotic supplement.
For this reason, supplement manufacturers often add additional CFUs to each capsule — which means that a 100 billion CFU capsule might actually have 150 billion CFU’s when it leaves the manufacturer — to account for the loss of live bacteria over time so that the guaranteed CFU’s per serving is still present at the date of expiration of the supplement. But not all brands do this. Why? Because it’s co$$$tlier.
You might think that “probiotics” are all just healthy bacteria, but actually, there are different types of bacteria, and they all have different benefits.
You want to make sure that you’re taking strains that have been well-studied, but also that you’re taking the right combination of bacterial strains for the benefits you’re looking for.
Some formulations only contain singular bacterial strains and others, which are considered broad-spectrum, contain multiple strains that cover all your bases.
This might be THE most important factor. Why? Because you can have the right dosage and the right strains, but if the bacteria aren’t surviving past your stomach acid to make it to your intestines, you’re simply not getting any of the benefits.
As I just mentioned, live probiotics are also fragile organisms that naturally die after production and distribution, which can mean that many probiotic formulations lose their potency over time.
A shelf-stable product, which uses technology to make sure the bacteria stay alive — even without refrigeration — is one great way to make sure the number of probiotics on the label are actually in the bottle.
Then you have to ask: once your bacteria get to the gut, can they actually reach the right area of your intestines and contribute to the microbial ecosystem? In order to do this, they must be able to adhere to the gut wall and get to work.
These factors are what make the difference between a probiotic that works, and one that doesn’t.
Is Your Probiotic Actually Working?
Now that you’ve got the probiotic supplement lingo down, let’s get specific. What dosage, strains, and delivery method is best? When I was formulating the HAPPY GUT® RESTORE Probiotic, I spent weeks studying strains, delivery methods, and dosages to make sure I was creating the best effective possible product. Here are the factors I think make the difference between a standard probiotic and one that really contributes to total gut healing.
1. Well-Researched Strains
The HAPPY GUT® RESTORE Probiotic contain 10 of the most well-researched probiotic strains. Each has a specific, functional strength that collectively enhances the overall effect of the supplement. You can learn more about the specific strains below.
2. State-of-the-Art Survivability Technology
Many products lose their potency after they’re packaged, which means they deliver fewer numbers of beneficial bacteria than expected and become less effective. I chose the latest state-of-the-art technology — which reduces damaging exposure to moisture, oxygen, and light to extend the shelf life — and ensures the strains are alive and effective after packaging and storage for up to 24 months — without the need for refrigeration.
The capsules I selected even have delayed release technology for optimal protection from stomach acid and properly timed release of probiotics in the lower GI tract where they are most needed. This increases the survival and bioavailability of the organisms. Not to mention, the specific probiotic strains were carefully selected according to their ability to withstand the highly acidic stomach juices and adhere effectively to the intestinal walls.
5 Bacterial Strains for Total Gut Healing
After mastering the above, it’s safe to say that you’re on your way to being a well-informed already a probiotic expert. But let’s go even deeper into the thinking behind probiotics — to the strains themselves. The 10 strains used in the HAPPY GUT® RESTORE Probiotic are designed to specifically benefit digestive health, support healthy elimination, boost immunity, rebalance gut flora, and repopulate good ‘belly bugs’ after antibiotic therapy. Here are five of them and why I included them in this probiotic:
Lactobacillus acidophilus (DDS®-1)
This is a potent immunomodulatory probiotic strain shown to enhance immune activity and significantly reduce the incidence and duration of cold and flu symptoms. It has also been shown to improve microbiome diversity following antibiotic therapy and is effective against candidiasis and SIBO.
Bifidobacterium bifidum (UABb-10™)
This strain is known for improving functional constipation and symptoms of IBS, including abdominal pain, bloating, belching, flatulence, and diarrhea. Upper gastrointestinal symptoms associated with H. pylori infections also benefit from B. bifidum.
Bifidobacterium lactis (UABla-12™)
This strain has been present in human food for decades and is broadly recognized for its key role in the human intestinal microflora throughout life. Its anti-inflammatory properties are useful in attenuating the symptoms of colitis, while supporting the body against allergies and allergic rhinitis.
Lactobacillus salivarius (UALs-07™)
This strain of bacteria has been shown to decrease inflammation and restore a disrupted microbiome. It also improves oral health by reducing gum bleeding and bad breath.
Bifidobacterium longum (UABI-14™)
This strain has shown an ability to improve the make-up and metabolic activities of gut bacteria, and reduce symptoms of celiac disease, IBS, and functional constipation. Studies show B. longum also significantly reduces insulin resistance.
And that’s exactly why I custom-formulated HAPPY GUT® RESTORE Probiotic
HAPPY GUT® RESTORE is a powerful 100B CFU shelf-stable, broad spectrum probiotic, with ten of the most well-researched strains that work together to reintroduce beneficial bacteria for a healthy gut flora so your stomach can return to doing its job quietly, without talking back.
