The 3 Pillars of Detoxification [Plus 15 Signs You Need to Invest in Detox TODAY]

There are so many claims about “detox” in this world. You hear them all the time:

This is the best supplement for detox!

This workout detoxes your body like no other!

Eat more leafy greens for their detoxification properties!

Unfortunately, many of these claims lack any kind of scientific basis.

So how do you tell which ones are legit, or not? Part of the answer is understanding the 3 pillars of detoxification to make sure any detox practice you try covers all three.

Luckily, I’ve developed the easiest way to do just that. It’s called the HAPPY GUT ® RESET: 7-Day Detox , and it’s a program I’ve developed over many years of helping my patients get their health back.

But before we dive into my 7-day detox, let’s back up and talk about what detox actually is.

What is detoxification?

Detoxification is the body’s way of getting rid of old or unwanted substances. These substances could be waste from physiological processes, chemicals from the environment, or even hormones or proteins the body no longer needs. The body needs to lean on a sort of waste management service — it recycles some of the material, and then breaks down and gets rid of the rest.

Unfortunately, our modern lives expose us to all sorts of chemicals. A majority of these are in our air and water, but you can also chemicals in our food, cosmetics, and even the medications you may be taking that can overload your detoxification systems. When this happens, you may start to develop symptoms of toxicity.

“Over-Toxicity” can affect the body in practically endless ways, and will eventually start to manifest in daily symptoms. Your body may not tell you it needs a detox, but it’s going to speak to you in other ways that are surefire signs your body cells need detoxification.

The tricky part is that many of these symptoms are vague and widespread, which means you might be misdiagnosed or go undiagnosed, when really all you need is to better support your detox engines. Oftentimes, my patients come to me after years of trying to pinpoint the root cause of their nasal congestion, chronic fatigue, brain fog, or acne, to name a few examples, only to find out that investing in detox-supporting practices is able to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately, even if you know that “over-toxicity” is the root cause of your health issues, there are a lot of sham detox products or ineffective plans out there that threaten to waste your time and money. I’m on a mission to empower you to take control of your health. So first, you need to make sure any detox plan you try supports the 3 pillars of detoxification: The liver, the gut, and the gut microbiome.

The 3 Pillars of Liver Detox

If you have any of the symptoms of over-toxicity on a regular basis, or just feel like you’d benefit from a little extra detox, you need to target the three pillars of detoxification. Together, these three pillars hold up your detox systems to make sure you’re not getting overloaded with toxins. Without targeting all three of them, you won’t be able to truly get your detoxification processes back on track, and you might not see a difference in your health issues.

Healthy Liver

1. Liver

You’ll often hear the liver associated with detoxification. Why? Because it really is the foundational organ of detox! At only about 3 pounds, it does a LOT for its size. For example, the liver:

  • Produces proteins that play a role in blood clotting
  • Breaks down old or damaged blood cells
  • Ensures that your blood sugar level stays consistent
  • Converts the amino acids from protein into energy the body can use
  • Converts ammonia from protein to a much less toxic substance called urea
  • Helps fight infections

When it comes to detoxification, the liver works in two phases. Both are critical to completely remove the chemicals and other toxins the body encounters daily.

Phase 1: Most toxins are fat soluble and that means when they build up in your body, they often hide in fatty tissues such as the brain and other organs. It also means they can’t dissolve in water, which makes them difficult for the body to eliminate. But don’t worry, that’s where the liver steps in! The liver works to convert fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble components that can then be eliminated. In phase 1, the liver converts a toxin into a reactive intermediate, which can actually potentially be more harmful than the original toxin. Phase 1 enzymes prepare substances to be excreted from the body.

SUMMARY

Fat-Soluble TOXIN —> Phase 1 —> Reactive Intermediate

Phase 2: In this phase, the liver will attach an anchor molecule to that reactive intermediate, such as a sulfur-containing compound, which makes the intermediate compound water-soluble so that the body can then excrete it with the bile or in the urine. It basically neutralizes those reactive substances, preventing DNA damage, and preparing them for removal via the kidneys or gallbladder.

SUMMARY

Reactive Intermediate —> Phase 2 —> Water-soluble Metabolite

You need both phase 1 and phase 2 to be working optimally to really have healthy detoxification. In fact, if phase 1 is working optimally but phase 2 is slower, the extremely toxic intermediate compounds produced in phase 1 can build up and damage your DNA. I often explain it to my patients like this:
Phase I sets the countdown timer on an intracellular bomb, and Phase 2 deactivates that timer so the bomb doesn’t explode.

As you can see, the liver is really the foundation of detoxification. But it doesn’t act alone! The gut also plays a big role in detoxification.

2. The gut

Your digestive tract is a complex ecosystem that is at the center of so many of your body’s processes. Along with the skin, the gut is really how your body interacts with the outside world by processing all the foods you eat and liquids you drink. Your gut lining is an important part of digestion. It contains a one-cell-layer-thick semipermeable membrane that is responsible for absorbing nutrients and keeping other harmful things — like large, partially-digested food particles and of course, yeast, bacteria, toxins and chemicals from the environment, the food you eat, and medications you take out of the bloodstream where they can wreak havoc by triggering an immune response that leads to inflammation.

Unfortunately, an imbalance in the gut microbiome can lead to a breakdown in the gut wall, opening up the velcro-like connections between cells known as tight junction proteins — which are like the security guards who decide what passes through and what stays out. In essence, this is what a leaky gut is — loosened tight junctions. As a result, it allows toxins to slip through the gut lining and cause inflammation, which can lead to any of the 15 symptoms of impaired detoxification we talked about earlier.

There’s also a strong connection between what the gut does for detox and what the liver does. For example:

  • After the gut breaks down and absorbs what you eat, the liver converts food into energy and nutrients.
  • Blood carries nutrients, medications, and toxins from the digestive organs to the liver. This critical organ processes and eventually detoxifies these things, after which the liver releases them back into the blood or to the colon for elimination.
  • The liver gets 70 percent of its blood supply from the intestine via the portal vein, which carries blood from the gut and other organs to the liver.
  • The liver produces bile, a fluid made and released in the liver that the gallbladder stores. Bile travels to the gut to break down dietary fats and helps eliminate the toxins that are fat-soluble.

And then, there are the bacteria living in your gut — collectively known as your gut microbiome.

3. The Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome is the community of at least 100 trillion bacteria living inside your intestines. These bacteria live mainly in your large intestine and help you break down your food, produce essential postbiotic nutrients and important signaling molecules like neurotransmitters. But the reason I’m mentioning it here is because the gut microbiome also supports detoxification. In fact, gut bacteria are often the first ones to start breaking down toxins or pesticides or chemicals that you ingest.

Unfortunately, although these chemicals supposedly don’t harm humans, these chemicals — which are designed to kill unwanted pests like insects, weeds, rodents, and fungi — can end up killing our own beneficial gut bacteria. Exposure to pesticides (even in run-off water), like chlorpyrifos, glyphosate, and atrazine can reduce your gut microbial diversity in the same way antibiotics do, and consequently impair detoxification. Encouraging diversity and abundance of good bacteria in your gut by eating fermented foods, a high-fiber diet, and probiotic supplements, is an absolutely critical part of supporting detoxification.

How to Jumpstart Detox in Less Than a Week

This may have started feeling like a lot. In fact, it can get overwhelming trying to figure out where to start. And even if you do, there’s no guarantee that what you choose to do is going to be effective. What would be an effective detox? One that either eliminates or improves ongoing chronic symptoms you may have believed were here to stay.

So, next you start looking at cleanses and detoxes. There are a bunch to choose from, so how do you decide? Well, go back to the fundamentals I just taught you and ask this question: Are they addressing the 3 pillars of detoxification? If not, then they’re leaving one or two stones unturned and potentially sabotaging your long-term results, or just simply taking your money.

Next, ask this question: Do they support Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detoxification effectively? Again, if the answer is no or unclear, then they’re only doing half the job. You wouldn’t just paint half a wall, right? You want to ensure that whatever detox you’re choosing is going to do one hundred percent of the job.

So, if you’re thinking about starting a detox, it’s important to remember there are a lot of different types of detoxes, and they’re not all the same. The HAPPY GUT ® RESET: 7-Day Detox was designed to specifically target the 3 pillars of detoxification and help you jumpstart detox in less than a week. It also is designed to support both Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detoxification in a balanced fashion that ensures your detox engines are running at max capacity.

Some cleanses or detoxes will promise you optimal health in just a few days, or claim that theirs is the magic potion that will cure all your health woes. Some will have you severely restrict calories, not eat at all, or give up solid foods completely. This detox is something totally different, it focuses on maximizing your nutritional intake with whole foods and a rich meal-replacing CLEANSE SHAKE that contains the nutrients your body needs to support all three pillars of detoxification.

The 7-Day Detox will help you beat sugar cravings, become bloat-free, and even lose weight in as little as a single week. But that doesn’t even capture all of its benefits. Here’s the feedback we’ve received from satisfied clients:

Alessandra said: “I had decided to do this program back in the summer. It was easy to follow and I didn’t feel hungry at all. I love the delicious shakes. My weight dropped and so did the sugar cravings . No need for coffee for energy and love the mental clarity. I have followed this detox program twice now. Both time successfully. I suggest this program to anyone, if you need to take off the last 10 lbs or just a quick reset, it works.”

Scott said: “At the end of the 7 days what changed in my health was… “I felt I had more energy . Realized I didn’t need coffee as much as I did. And reset my idea of when I was truly hungry (much less often than I’d thought before).”

MR said: “I decided to do the detox to address stubborn weight that wouldn’t come off. I got so many more benefits than having my clothes fit better glowing skin , less inflammation , and an opportunity to focus on my health and rebalance my eating habits.”

“I was motivated to sign up for the 7-day Happy Gut Reset to lose weight, gain energy, and to start new healthy eating habits. It was not difficult ! I was rarely hungry, which was surprising. The instructions were clear and easy. It fit easily into my lifestyle . In fact, it saved a lot of time as I wasn’t cooking three meals a day.”

The 7-Day Detox contains:

  1. CLEANSE SHAKE to provide fiber, hypoallergenic plant-based pea protein, and other nutrients to support all three phases of detoxification
  2. DETOX 1 supplement to support phase 1 detoxification
  3. DETOX 2 supplement to support sluggish phase 2 detoxification
  4. REVIVE Probiotics to inoculate the gut with billions of beneficial bacteria each day that support microbiome detoxification

In just 7 days, this detox can help you make massive progress in eliminating symptoms of over-toxicity. I’ve had hundreds of patients do the RESET and consistently hear their success stories — headaches eliminated, bloating subsided, or chronic inflammatory symptoms gone after years of struggling.

Worried you don’t have the time? Carolee, a busy mom, found it was actually super easy to implement.
